Now in its 53rd year, the annual New York Film Festival is probably the best and most prestigious film festival in the US. Anything you can get tickets for is likely worth seeing, but here are some of the festival's most anticipated movies: Bridge of Spies, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks; Steve Jobs, with Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet; and The Walk, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Friday, September 26, through Sunday, October 11, see schedule for details, tickets required.

As you might get from the name, Art in Odd Places (AiOP) is committed to offering art in unexpected public spaces, a response to what the founder sees as "the dwindling of public space and personal civil liberties," particularly around Manhattan's Fourteenth Street. This year's participants promise to "offer one hour of free help to save the social reputation of the Netherlands," rethink the street sign, and interpret the poems of Garcia Lorca. Friday, October 9, through Monday, October 12, see schedule for details, free.

The organizers behind the Indigenous Peoples Day Native American Festival seek "to reclaim and redefine [Columbus Day in order to] celebrate the rich cultures and histories of indigenous people in the Americas." Among the scheduled activities are a powwow, spoken word performances, a healing ceremony at sunrise, and live music, with several special guests scheduled to drop by. Prepare to be humbled and awed. Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 12, 11 am to 7 pm, see schedule for details, $12, tickets required.

This ain't your granny's craft fair. Instead, this festival features 250 juried craft displays from just about every corner of the United States, each and every one selected on the basis of "workmanship and uniqueness of design." There's also live entertainment, for when you need a break from browsing, and craft demos, for when you want to see how the proverbial bowl (or quilt or necklace) gets made. Saturday, October 10, 11 am to 8:30 pm, and Sunday, October 11, 10 am to 6:30 pm, free.
