Manhattan is no longer the bastion of fine food in New York City. Brooklyn has been slowly gaining world-renowned chefs, and now boasts a couple of the nation’s top restaurants. Here’s a list of some of the haunts you should be checking out over the East River. By Siobhan Wallace.

Tucked away in the now-gentrified neighborhood of Bushwick, Roberta’s is turning out some of the best pizzas in the country (it’s already made our list of the best spots to pair your pizza with a cocktail). Try to get a spot in the garden during nicer days, and watch out for famous food personalities stopping by to chat on Heritage Radio Network whose studio is housed there. Be sure to get there early, or better yet go for lunch, since they don’t take reservations.

Do or Dine

1108 Bedford Avenue
(718) 684-2290

One of the borough’s newest restaurants opened to much fanfare over the summer in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Billing itself as an “American izakaya”, Do or Dine is getting noticed for doing experimental dishes like foie gras doughnuts and dumpling nachos that aren’t outrageously over-priced.

DuMont is a longtime Williamsburg standby for a great, inexpensive meal, and is perfect for date night. The menu is full of American classics including macaroni and cheese; asked to be seated in the gorgeous back garden which feels like an expensive modern tree house.

One of New York’s best steakhouses for decades, Peter Luger’s opened in Williamsburg long before the hipsters arrived. Don’t expect plush service or rich ambiance, just one of the best porterhouses in the country. Reservations required.

Al di Là has established itself as Park Slope’s traditional Northern Italian restaurant go-to. There are seasonal menu changes, but some particular dishes like their house-made ravioli, and braised rabbit with olives, are perpetual favorites.
