Warm and inviting, Ward III features an eclectic drink menu as well as custom cocktails made to order. Just tell the bartenders which spirits and flavors you like to drink, and they will mix a libation to your liking. There’s also a handful of bar snacks to keep you going, like bacon-wrapped dates and meatball sliders. Whiskey fans will want to drop in for free tastings on Monday evenings led by a different brand ambassador or distiller every week.

159 Duane St.
New York, NY

Designed with the same gleaming white subway tile décor as the Prospect Heights original, the Tribeca edition of Weather Up is an attractive addition to the neighborhood. Cocktail choices include the Quaker (rye whiskey, cognac, housemade grenadine and fresh lemon juice), the Revolver (bourbon, coffee liqueur and orange bitters), as well as bartender’s choice. Bar bites include oysters with green chile and caviar plates—this is, after all, Tribeca.

This Old Hollywood style cocktail bar certainly plays up an element of drama. The bar is decorated like a stage, complete with red velvet curtains and an arch of vintage light bulbs. Bartenders here do double duty as performers, doing flair, magic tricks and sideshow antics such as swallowing needles. If the main room is too crowded, head upstairs to the balcony or go downstairs through the kitchen to get to the VIP area behind the bar, which also doubles as a—you guessed it—stage.

This spacious sequel to the tiny East Village wine haven Terroir offers more than 150 bottles of wine, all listed in a quirky, 60-page binder. There are also wines by the glass or half-glass. The small plates menu includes gems such as oxtail risotto balls and bone marrow bruschetta. Head over early for happy hour and drink free sherry from 4 to 6 p.m.

Romantic and exotic, this restaurant/bar with a basement-level lounge is perfect for date night as well as group outings. Loosen up with a Drunken Dragon’s Milk (Charbay green tea vodka, young coconut puree, Thai basil and five-spice bitters) or a Bashful Maiden (Hendrick’s gin, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, velvet falernum, lemon juice and pureed melon). Be sure to end your night downstairs in the opium den-themed lounge where DJs spin to an attractive crowd.
