The New York African Film Festival has three primary goals: to increase opportunities for African cinema in the United States, to develop a non-African audience for African movies, and to promote African culture in all its manifestations. The festival, now in its 23rd year, features Q&As, panel discussions, and, of course, lots and lots of screenings, including full-length features and shorts. The New York Botanical Garden's annual Mother's Day Weekend Garden Party promises to be even bigger, even better, and even lovelier than past years' parties. Activities include family-friendly live music, watercolor painting, lawn games, poetry readings (and the chance to write your own verse), a workshop on floral arranging, and tours/walks. Opportunities for picnics and soul-refreshment abound. Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8, 10 am to 6 pm, $30, tickets required.
