Outbursts Follow Anti-Bias Protest On S.I.

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- A protest in the name of peace erupts with anger on Staten Island.

A shouting match broke out on the steps of a Port Richmond Church amid a march against violence involving Hispanic immigrants.

On one side were community activists from the Bronx and Brooklyn. On the other, politicians from Staten Island who accused the activists of exploiting the situation.

"What they're doing is they're inflaming an already, you know, painful situation for a lot of people," said State Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn).

"We should keep fighting together. We should not be hurting each other.  We should be fighting together," said Sen. Ruben Diaz. (D-Bronx).

There have been at least eleven reports of possible hate crimes on Staten Island since April.
