S.I. Boy Dies After Being Pulled From Upstate Motel Pool

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) -- State police say an 8-year-old Staten Island boy has died after being pulled from the deep end of a pool at an upstate motel.

Troopers say Toni Li and his 17-year-old sister were swimming in the pool at the Super 8 motel in the town of Plattsburgh, near the Canadian border 140 miles north of Albany.

They say the boy, who didn't know how to swim, ventured into the deep end and experienced difficulties. Troopers say the sister tried to help, but also struggled because she couldn't swim.

The boy was eventually pulled from the water. Emergency personnel tried to revive him at the scene before taking him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are calling his death an apparent drowning pending an autopsy Tuesday morning.
