NYC Skyscrapers To Go Dark To Help Migrating Birds

NEW YORK (AP) - Some of New York City's iconic skyscrapers are joining a campaign to help millions of migrating birds this fall.

New York City Audubon says the buildings have agreed to turn off their lights from midnight to dawn during the peak migration season that began this week and runs until Oct. 31.

The group says the lights confuse and blind the birds. It says about 90,000 birds die in the city each year because of collisions with buildings.

It says the skyscrapers that will turn off their lights include the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, the Time Warner Center, Rockefeller Center and the Worldwide Plaza.

The organization began its Light Out NY campaign in 2005.
