Brooklyn Honors Mother Teresa With Lighting Ceremony
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The Empire State Building wouldn't do it, but Brooklyn Borough Hall has no problems honoring Mother Teresa.
For the next six nights, Brooklyn Borough Hall will be illuminated in blue and white -- the colors of Mother Teresa's habit and sari -- to pay tribute to the Nobel Peace Prize winner, who spent many years ministering to orphans and the poor in India.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz was one of several city officials to speak out against the Empire State Building's June decision not to honor the Catholic nun and humanitarian with a similar light scheme.
"I've listened to their arguments, and they have a right to their arguments for sure, but she is more than just a religious figure. She really stood, in my opinion, for the best of humanity, Markowitz told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond.

Markowitz attended Wednesday night's lighting ceremony a day before what would have been Mother Teresa's 100th birthday and said the borough was proud to honor her.
"We always have to correct everyone else and we'll do it right in Brooklyn. Period," Markowitz said.
