Malnourished, Dead Animals Found In Long Island Home

WEST HILLS, N.Y. (WCBS 880/AP) -- A triggered automatic fire alarm led to the discovery of dozens of sickly and dead animals at a spacious Long Island home.

Firefighters responded to the $2 million West Hills home after the alarm went off there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Suffolk SPCA says there was no fire, but they found a skeletal-looking pony, three goats and about 100 dogs.

SPCA Chief Roy Gross says the animals had no food or water.

A doctor and his wife were arrested Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty.

Gross says the couple's two-story, three-garage home sits on seven acres with a barn, where the pony was found. Officials said the home was so filthy they had to wear air packs while inside.

Gross told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall the house appears to be vacant and has now been condemned. He said he has seen many cases where people have lost their homes to foreclosure and left their pets to die.
