Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Day 1: Nicholas K

By Alison McLaughlin

This Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 is one of many firsts.

The first for Lincoln Center and, a first for many of the young designers showcasing solo collections.
First out of the gate and only half an hour late was sibling design duo Nicholas and Christopher Kunz of "Nicholas K". Prior to launching her own line Nicholas cut her teeth at companies such as Tommy Hilfiger, Coach and DKNY before striking out on her own, with brother in tow, in 2003.

At 9:24am the plastic was finally ripped from the runway and within moments vintage sounds from the Rolling Stones filled the room as the Ray Ban adorned models began their inaugural strut down the catwalk. The clothes? Muted tom boy military cool, but not at all harsh, more "gently menacing".

The utilitarian palate of soft greys and khaki are given playful edge with oversized collars and romantic draping. This spring Nicholas K's wards off the lingering chill of winter with soft knits and tailored hoodies; with exaggerated cowl to distinguish them from ordinary street wear.

Capri pants for both women and the men who dare feature zipper detailing - a carry over from seasons past. The drop-crotch genie pants has stuck around as well. A whimsical addition to the wardrobe for sure though in my own curvier experience, it's a look better enjoyed in the pages of a magazine.
