N.J. To Consider Putting Ads On School Buses
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS 2/AP) -- School buses as billboards?
In their search for new revenue streams, New Jersey officials have turned yellow. They're contemplating selling ads on the sides of school buses.
A bill allowing them is now being considered by the state Assembly's Education Committee.
Political ads would not be permitted on the buses, nor would ads for alcohol or tobacco products.
The state education commissioner would get the final say about any potentially offensive ads.
Boards of Education that contract for ad space would have to use half the revenue to defray fuel costs for student busing. The other half would go toward school programs or services.
A similar bill went nowhere in the prior legislative session.
But Gov. Chris Christie cut $812 million from the education budget this year.
Bill sponsors said any revenue-raising ideas that don't hurt kids or harm education should be considered.
