Fire Officials Investigate Fatal S.I. Blaze

NEW YORK (CBS 2/AP) -- Investigators were looking into a deadly fire on Staten Island Saturday.

It started at a home on LaGuardia Street in Castelton Corners just before 4:30 a.m. When emergency crews arrived, they found two people inside.

A woman escaped a fierce house fire on Staten Island by leaping from a second story window early Saturday, but her husband died when he could not escape his bedroom.

Neighbors and officials said the 68-year-old victim, Joe Abdo, had multiple sclerosis and had trouble moving on his own. Firefighters found him in a first-floor bedroom.

Neighbors said Debbie Abdo, 64, tried to reach her husband, but couldn't get through the smoke. She was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation.
