Anti-Aging Products Put To The Test In Study

Updated: 09/29/10 9:39 a.m.

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Thousands of anti-aging products crowd drugstore and department store shelves but do any of them really work?

A scientific study tested dozens of products promising to reverse wrinkles and even tighten and brighten skin.

Some of the results may come as a surprise.

Researchers at the Good Housekeeping Institute had over 800 women test 90 products in 12 different categories from wrinkle smoothers to hand creams for a total of 18 months.

Miriam Arond, director of the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, told CBS 2's Kristine Johnson the group took "5,000 before and after photos on our lab equipment to see how women looked before and then after."

The Institute also assembled a team of some of the country's leading dermatologists, including Mt. Sinai's Dr. Ellen Marmur and NYU's Dr. Doris Day to provide insight on the effectiveness of each product's ingredients.

Following the use of complexion machines that could even count the number of wrinkles on a tester's face, the Institute tabulated the results:

Best Eye Cream: Olay Pro-X
Test results showed the product, priced at $42, significantly helped to reduce under-eye wrinkles and even diminished crow's feet.

Best Night Cream: L'Oreal Paris Advanced RevitaLift Deep Set Wrinkle Repair
At just $20, the creme received the best overall consumer performance score for firming and lessening fine lines. "It also actually helped reduce wrinkles on the forehead," Arond said.

Best Moisturizer: Chanel's Ultra Correction Lift-Lifting Firming Day Cream
At $150 a tube, the product did what the name implies. "It is splurge worthy, if you can afford it because not only is it hydrating, but it actually did lessen the number of sun spots," Arond said.

For many women, a sagging jawline can also be a problem spot with little recourse but plastic surgery. But researchers found Peter Thomas' Neuropeptide Serum, which costs $150, noticeably firmed and toned testers' jawlines.
