NEW YORK (CBS 2) — In a twisted tale at sea, a wealthy couple from Manhattan claims they were thrown off a cruise ship – after they were insulted by another passenger because the wife is Jewish.

It’s known as the grandest, most luxurious ship ever built, but the Queen Mary 2 from England was a nightmare for two seniors from the East Side, Gloria Sher Evans and her husband Frederick.

“I haven’t slept in two weeks. I just can’t believe it,” Gloria said.

The couple was onboard the ship on a 30-day, $20,000 cruise to Quebec, England, and the Mediterranean last month.

They were having a good time until one night, at a dinner with strangers, when they say a man insulted them.

“He looked at me and said, ‘shut up,’” Gloria said.

Then, he allegedly discriminated against them.

“He said, ‘don’t you see I’m talking? There’s too many [expletive] Jews,’” Gloria said.

That caused 82-year-old Gloria, who is Jewish, to lose her cool.

“I said, ‘you know what, you should go [expletive] yourself,’” she said.

The next day, the couple was called to the commodore’s office. Gloria said he accused her of abuse, saying a guest claimed the 95-pound senior hit someone.

“He said, ‘you’re gonna have to leave the ship,’” she said.

“They took their word, without listening to us,” Frederick said.

Published reports say the cruise line stands by its actions, claiming Gloria was disrespectful and disruptive, and that she gets belligerent when she drinks.

Still, on the ship, the commodore later relented, allowing the couple to stay, but only for a few more days.

“He said, ‘but you are confined to your quarters,’” Gloria said.

Eventually, the couple made it back to New York, where the ship stopped before heading off to England and the Mediterranean. The couple never got to finish the 30-day cruise, and so far has received no refund of the $20,000 they paid for it.

“But here is the crux of the whole thing: the man that owns the ship, lives in Miami, is Jewish,” Gloria said.

It’s an ironic twist in the tale of alleged anti-Semitism and travel interrupted.

The cruise line did not return CBS 2’s calls for comment.

I have seen this woman several times in a bar on the East Side and I have never found her to be anything but repellent. I hope those Cunard customers who claim to have been bothered by her support the company when she sues.

  2. UD says:

This is disgusting. There is no place for antisemitism. The guy who called her a Jew should have been kicked off the ship. They are clearly a frail, older couple who couldn’t hurt anyone. They deserve a full refund and an apology.

WCBS–Why can’t you monitor this site better? These comments need to be moderated.

Yes, that’s what we need: Censorship. It’ll keep America free and maintain her values. Besides, if people doesn’t agree with Appalled, than they shouldn’t talk.

The cruise story is out of character for a big NY TV station. Surprised WCBS 2 carried the story.

Who cares people trying to survive on mere nothing when jobs are scarce –who really gives a flap about this when a 30 day cruise is the also somoeone’s salary for a year to care for their family –really complain about something else –others face discrimination daily get a grip…

  13. Fely Britton says:

Gloria and her husband should have most of their $20,000 refunded, but Gloria should go to AA or into a treatment program and get “clean and sober” before before booking another cruise.

In a Cosmopolitan culture sophistication is everything, and all else is meaningless. Fredrick and Gloria never thought of themselves as Jews, they felt that they were citizens of the world where ones ethnicity is invisible. Gloria could not believe what she was hearing when the bigot called her a Jew. Those words tore off her mask and exposed her to a bitter reality that she could never escape from again.
