NEW YORK (WCBS 880/1010 WINS) – City Council Speaker Christine Quinn called an emergency meeting of police, club owners, gay groups and elected officials following a spate of anti-gay attacks in New York City.
Quinn is spearheading the campaign.
“We wanted to organize and send a message to anybody who might be a copy cat, that our community is responding to these attacks, that we are working with the NYPD and that we are not going to take them lying down…they are quite simply unacceptable,” said Quinn.
WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reports Quinn also blasted Carl Paladino’s statements about gays as “extremely offensive, extremely dangerous, and it is hard to separate those statement from what is happening on the streets all throughout our city.”
1010 WINS’ Stan Brooks reports Quinn says these hate crimes are intended to spread fear and drive gays back into the closet.
