Archbishop Dolan: NY Times Reviews Are Insensitive

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City's archbishop is taking issue with The New York Times for praising an art exhibit and a play he says are insensitive toward Catholics.

The exhibit is by the AIDS activist group ACT UP. The play is "The Divine Sister."

Archbishop Timothy Dolan said the Times is allowing insensitive references to Catholics that it wouldn't allow for others.

The Cambridge, Mass., exhibit includes a poster of the late Cardinal John O'Connor alongside a condom. Dolan says a photo accompanying the play review showed a nun in a "suggestive pose."

The paper says it covers cultural events, "even if some may disagree with the content."

The play's producers say it is a comic homage to Hollywood films about nuns and is a celebration of those characters, not a religious commentary.
