Damaso Marte Has Shoulder Surgery

NEW YORK (AP) Yankees reliever Damaso Marte has had surgery on his pitching shoulder and expects to be sidelined until late next season.

A left-handed specialist, Marte had his arm in a sling Sunday when he arrived in the New York clubhouse. He said he had surgery Friday to repair a tear in his labrum and was told he should be able to begin throwing after the 2011 All-Star break.

Marte's last appearance this season was July 7. He had no record and a 4.08 ERA, throwing 17 2-3 innings in 30 games.

The 35-year-old Marte has one season left on a $12 million, three-year contract. The Yankees hold a $4 million option for 2012 with a $250,000 buyout.

Marte said the operation was performed in Cincinnati by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek.
