Charlie Sheen Allegedly Trashed Plaza Hotel Room

NEW YORK (CBS New York/AP) -- Charlie Sheen was hospitalized Tuesday for a psychiatric evaluation after a woman called police to say the star was throwing furniture and yelling in his room at The Plaza, sources told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

Police were called to the room at about 2 a.m. and Sheen appeared highly intoxicated, a law enforcement official said. He was not arrested and went voluntarily.

Sheen's representative said the actor was taken to a hospital after having an allergic reaction to medication. The spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, said Sheen headed back to Los Angeles Tuesday night.

Sources told CBS 2 HD that Sheen was highly intoxicated when he was found and had apparently started drinking about 8 p.m. Monday. A mystery woman allegedly called police sometime after 1:30 a.m. from inside the bathroom in the room for help.

The New York Post reported that police officials said the woman was an escort.

Sources said the unidentified woman in the room claimed Sheen, 45,  was acting irrationally and throwing furniture. Sheen reportedly told police he had been "out partying" and flew into a rage when noticed his wallet was missing after returning to his room.

At least $7,000 in damages to the hotel room was recorded, sources said. Tables and chairs had apparently been thrown around the room and a chandelier was also damaged.

On Tuesday night the Plaza Hotel was still buzzing.

"I saw it this morning and I wasn't even planning on coming here and then I just saw the TV cameras now," tourist Mary Gonzalez told CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez.

"It didn't surprise me. I mean he has a pretty bad track record," Michelle Frank of Chelsea said.

"You have to have a heavy heart for people that are in trouble.  You have to sympathize for those types of people," Michael Damato said.

Sunday night, Sheen, ex-wife Denise Richards, and their daughters Sam, 6, and Lola, 5, took in a showing of "Mary Poppins" as part of a long family weekend.  They all stayed in separate rooms at the Plaza Hotel.

Richards accompanied Sheen to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, according to reports. Sheen was reportedly in New York on a family vacation.

The Plaza Hotel is not filing any charges. Sheen was not arrested.

It was the latest in a series of troubles for Sheen, the star of CBS' "Two and a Half Men,'' who has had problems with alcohol and drugs in the past.

In August, he pleaded guilty in Aspen, Colo. to misdemeanor third-degree assault after a Christmas Day assault on his second wife, Brooke Mueller Sheen. Prosecutors dropped more serious charges and he avoided jail time and he was sentenced to 30 days in a rehabilitation center, 30 days of probation and 36 hours of anger management.

In the 9-1-1 call, Mueller told the operator: "My husband had me, with a knife, and I'm scared for my life, and he threatened me."

Mueller Sheen told police that the actor threatened to kill her and brandished a knife after she told him she wanted a divorce. Charlie Sheen said they argued but he denied threatening her, and he told police that he was upset by the divorce threat. Sheen previously went through a bitter divorce and custody battle with his ex-wife Denise Richards.

Because of Sheen's reputation, guests and people who had gathered outside the hotel took the news in stride.

"I know a lot of people who do things like that --- men and women. No one's perfect," German tourist Claudia Wieland said.

In December 1996, he was charged with attacking a girlfriend at his Southern California home. He later pleaded no contest and was placed on two years of probation.

In 1998, his father, actor Martin Sheen, turned him in for violating his parole after a cocaine overdose sent him to the hospital. He was ordered to undergo a rehabilitation program.

He also had a very bitter and public divorce with actress Denise Richards, the mother of his two children, Sam, 6, and Lola, 5.

Sheen is also the star of films such as "Platoon,'' "Wall Street'' and "Hot Shots!''
