Farming And Science Team Up On Long Island

CALVERTON, NY (WCBS 880) - Long Island farmers and Stony Brook University are joining forces in research and development to help advance agriculture and new products.

A $3.5 million state grant has been secured to create the new Agriculture Consumer Science Center at the Calverton Business Incubator.

"There's an example of great products," Long Island Farm Bureau executive director Joe Gergela told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "They make soap. They make shampoo. They make cosmetics and other things from the grape."

University researchers are helping the farming industry to grow and compete on the world level.

Gergela says, "We need to evolve and have research and development that will help keep agriculture economically viable."
