NEW YORK (WFAN) — There could be a major shift behind home plate in 2011 for the Yankees. Prospect Jesus Montero will get a chance to win Jorge Posada’s job as starting catcher, reports the NY Daily News.

From the Daily News:

“The consensus among the Yankees’ high command is that Montero who turns 21 on Nov. 28 – is ready to assume the starting catcher’s job, according to a source with knowledge of the team’s thinking.

“Montero’s future was among the topics of discussion during the Yankee meetings at the Stadium over the past two days, with Lee and the free-agent and trade markets dominating the conversation.”

According to the report, Posada would shift to DH if Montero wins the job coming out of spring training.

Yankees have to look at the stiffs that did nothing in the post season. Some of them have done for a couple of years now, should they be given another chance or should they try something new?

Chad Moller can pack it in. Cervelli proved he didn’t have a major league stick. Jorge was handicapped at thirty nine years of age. Welcome Jesus Montero, hopefully he can hold the Texans and Rays in check and hit.

It’s kinda sad, but part of sports: players get old, their skills diminish, and younger / better guys are there to take over. If the Yanks had a similar prospect at SS, we’d be wondering what they would do w/ Jeter! and maybe even Mo. They ALL get old.

This should be interesting. If this comes to pass, Posada’s relationship with Girardi will move to another level and not in a positive direction.

The player that he replaced as Posada became the starting catcher is now the manager that is to make that difficult move. If Possada remembers what went through when he got the job, he should understand now when his comes appraching an end. It is part of the life cycle of a big league player. It should not put a bad taste in Posada’s mouth, especially it is Girardi that we are talking about.
