Rell To Kick Off Annual Conn. Food Drive

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Gov. M. Jodi Rell is kicking off the annual state employee holiday drive to benefit Foodshare and the Connecticut Food Bank.

Rell is scheduled to launch the 27th annual Governor's Care and Share Holiday Drive on Thursday. A ceremony is planned at the state Capitol.

All state employees are encouraged to participate in the annual campaign.

Rell said last year's annual drive was one of the most successful to date, with state agencies collecting more than four tons of food and raising thousands of dollars in cash. Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare are the state's two largest food distribution agencies.

In 2009, state employees collected 4.5 tons of nonperishable food and contributed $28,348 in cash donations, more than twice the cash total raised in 2008.
