Gov.-Elect Cuomo Opposes 9/11 Trial In New York
NEW YORK (CBS 2/AP) -- Gov.-elect Andrew Cuomo said he's against trying the professed mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks in New York.
He addressed the matter in a radio interview Thursday, a day after Attorney General Eric Holder said the Obama administration was close to deciding where to prosecute Khalid Sheik Mohammed.
"We are working to make a determination about the placement of that trial and I would hope that whatever the decision is it would be one that would be judged on the merits," Holder said.
Plans to have Mohammed stand trial in New York were met with outrage. The White House had sought to have him stand trial in a civilian court, but a military tribunal also remains a possibility.
Cuomo also said he supports natural gas drilling in upstate New York if it can be done safely. He says he'd be open to such drilling if it would create jobs but also protect the state's watersheds.
The prospect of "hydraulic fracturing'' to find natural gas has caused a bitter rift in areas that include the Marcellus Shale formation. Supporters believe it would boost the upstate economy, while environmentalists warn it would pollute the state's water and hurt tourism.
