Defense's Turn In Jim Leyritz DUI Death Trial

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — It's the defense's turn to present evidence in the Florida DUI manslaughter trial of former major league baseball player Jim Leyritz.

The defense case begins Monday with an opening statement from Leyritz lawyer David Bogenschutz. The defense is also expected to put on expert witnesses in such areas as toxicology and crash reconstruction.

The prosecution rested last week. Leyritz is accused of driving drunk, running a traffic light and causing a crash that killed 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch. Leyritz faces between four and 15 years in prison if convicted.

Leyritz played 11 seasons in the majors, hitting a memorable home run in the 1996 World Series for the New York Yankees.
