Holidays Discount Shopping Available For Seniors

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Okay, so you've reached a certain stage or your life and there are benefits that come with it -- like discounts on shopping for you and the grandkids. And you might be surprised how young you can be to qualify.

The holidays are a time of joy and wonder for kids. But for seniors young at heart shopping for grandkids the holidays can be a season of savings.

"There's a lot of great deals out there and not just if you're 65 or older," Ken Budd, executive editor of AARP the Magazine, told CBS 2's Scott Rapoport.

Budd said folks 50 and older can enjoy special savings and deals, thanks to their age alone.

"You've reached a certain age in life. This is one of the perks," Budd said.

He said Banana Republic is offering 10 percent off to folks 50 and over. Kohl's is offering 15 percent off to seniors 62 and up, one day a week.

"Great things for the kids -- leather jackets. At Kohl's, there are kids' clothes, appliances, shoes," Budd said.

He said KB Toys is giving a 10 percent discount for 50 and up every Tuesday.

"You just go and you say do you have a discount for seniors? Can you give me a discount? They might say yes," said Nancy Vison of Astoria.

Vison, a 72-year-old great-grandmother, said she's a savvy shopper.

"Of course. I have to save my money. I'm not getting any younger," Vison said.

She can often be found strolling Steinway Street in Astoria looking for deals. She said the secret is … you have to ask.

"You could bargain. You could try to bargain, see what happens," Vison said.

At Sports Lane she hit pay dirt in the form of a 10-percent discount.

And experts say the savings can really add up.

"It's 10 percent here, a few dollars there. Over the course of the year this can really add up to where it's hundreds of dollars or even thousands of dollars in savings," Budd said.

If you know where to go.
