WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reports

The Fiscal Policy Institute analysis found that immigrants worked in a wide range of occupations, with more than half holding white-collar jobs.

The independent research group said there was little basis for a widespread perception that the area's immigrants were displacing U.S.-born workers.

Anti-immigrant sentiment on Long Island has been on the rise as the immigrant population has grown, especially in Suffolk County where an Ecuadorean immigrant was killed in 2008.

The group warned that a continued anti-immigrant climate could hurt the area's economy.

Its findings, released Wednesday, were based on census data.
