NYC Looking To Hire 2 Bedbug-Sniffing Dogs

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City was looking to hire two bedbug-sniffing dogs to patrol apartment buildings.

The city Department of Housing Preservation and Development was seeking two male dogs trained in detecting bedbugs and their eggs.

According to the formal request for information that went out Monday, the dogs must be neutered and up to date on vaccines. They must be certified by the National Entomology Scent Detection Association or a similar group.

A department spokesman said the dogs will probably not be hired until next spring or summer.

The City Council was providing funding.

Bedbug sightings have surged in New York and around the nation in recent years.
