NYPD Detective Charged With Attempted Murder

NEW YORK (AP) -- A veteran New York City detective assigned to the mayor's security detail has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of an unarmed man.

Leopold McLean was released on bail Friday after appearing in court in Queens.

Authorities said the Nov. 15 shooting resulted from a confrontation between the off-duty detective and his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend.

The ex-boyfriend had violated a restraining order by turning up at the woman's home. He was wounded in the leg.

The 46-year-old McLean has been on the force for 17 years. He was assigned to the team of officers that does security sweeps for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The detective's lawyer decried him on Friday as a decorated officer with no history of using excessive force.
