Opportunistic St. John's Downs Wagner

NEW YORK (AP) -- D.J. Kennedy scored 20 points off the bench and St. John's defeated Wagner 69-61 on Wednesday night.

The Red Storm (5-1) scored 21 points off 21 Wagner turnovers in their fifth straight win.

St. John's forced 12 turnovers in the first half, while committing just two of their eight for the game and led 36-26 at the break.

The Seahawks (3-2) then shot 50 percent (11 of 22) and got 14 points from Tyler Murray in the second half to pull within four points.

Wagner used a 13-5 run midway through the second period to bring it to 58-54 on Murray's jumper with 6:28 to play. However, the Seahawks wouldn't get any closer as St. John's made 7 of 8 free throws the rest of the way.

Justin Brownlee added 17 points and Dwight Hardy had 10 for the Red Storm.

Wagner was led by Murray with 21 points. Josh Thompson added 12 and Latif Rivers 11 for the Seahawks.
