Bills To Revive NJ Casinos Advance

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Lawmakers have advanced legislation aimed to revive New Jersey's struggling casino industry but held a bill to shorten the standardbred racing season.

Thursday's action came less than 24 hours after Gov. Chris Christie vetoed plans for a full racing schedule at New Jersey's horse tracks.
The thoroughbred track at Monmouth Park in Oceanport ran on an abbreviated schedule last summer. The standardbred season at the Meadowlands race track is scheduled begin in January.

A report to Christie on the future of gaming recommended the state get out of the horse racing business. A $30 million subsidy to fatten racing purses was recently allowed to lapse.

In all, the Assembly Regulatory Oversight and Gaming panel advanced nearly a dozen bills to revise the state's gambling and entertainment industries. The centerpiece legislation would establish a new tourism district in Atlantic City with tighter state control.
