NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — New York City’s former mayor is thrilled with the proposal to rename the 59th Street Bridge for him.

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Ginny Kosola reports

The bridge inspired Simon and Garfunkel’s “59th Street Bridge” song, but now it could inspire others as the “Ed Koch Bridge.”

“I had nothing to do with it. I want to make that clear—I was shocked,” Koch said.

Although he was shocked, he still loved the idea.

Koch especially liked that the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel is to be renamed the Gov. Hugh Carey Tunnel at the same time because he worked so closely with Carey.

“To have the honor, and he have the honor of having these magnificent structures named for us at the same time made me feel particularly good,” Koch said.

  1. THE FUTURE OF NY says:

It’s the year 3011 and all the bridges and tunnels have been renamed. There’s nothing left to rename as all the names have been taken. Every park, including what was once Central Park has been renamed. Central Park is now known as Elliot Spitzer Park.

Time machines were invented in 2050 person and those who entered the time machine and fast-forwarded to 3011 exited the time machine to find out that all the street names had changed, every park, every building, every road.

In fact, New York was no longer called New York. Instead it was called NEW BLOOMBERG CITY. But in 3011, nobody could remember who the hell the man was nor did they give a rat’s ass.

Why can’t this country STOP with the renaming of EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! A huge waste of money and time during such a poor economy. The 59th Street bridge to be named after Koch…….please. Put the money into the schools and FDNY and NYPD where it’s needed.

  3. Must says:

this is what we call waste of money, and making things complicated for people who is gonna say koch bridge of cores i will keep calling it 59 st bridge like triborough bridge when they named rfk bridge

  4. The FaCtS R says:

And what is next ? Rename the Brooklyn bridge to Sara palin bridge.

  5. jlmbklyn says:

How about naming the tow truck yard after him. He really excelled at ticket issuance.

  6. tito says:

I hate bridges or tunnels named after people. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, The Triborough, The 59th St bridge at least describe its location in some way. Next we’ll have the Chase Manhattan Bridge, or the General Motors Tunnel. Yuck.

  7. Joe mama says:

So?? Whats in a name anyway. Besides it’s POS bridge… let ’em have it!

  8. trisha says:

Come on now, if he was paying the cost of all the sign changes then I would feel like,,.,who cares. BUT not the case so what a waste!!

  9. Seth says:

Renaming bridges/roads is the biggest waste of taxpayers money, and only inflates the egos of politicians at our expense and causes needles confusion. A name once given, should remain. If a politician wants a bridge named after them, build it!

  10. Brian says:

I thought the state has no money, how much will it cost to put up all new signs! They just pass the bill to us in form the form of DMV and LIRR increases!

  11. Rob says:

bus drivers will ask, “how am I doing?”

  12. AmericanCabbie says:

You won’t hear “Edward Koch Bridge” outside of the traffic report. This’ll go the way of the RFK Bridge and the Joe DiMaggio Highway. Never had a passenger tell me to go via the RFK or the Joe D. It’s still the Triboro or West Side Highway

    1. J says:

but do you say interboro or jackie robinson??? I still say interboro and no one knows what I am talking about.

  13. Peppy says:

Whats next? Rename the empire state building to the bloomberg tower? They should have left it as the 59th street bridge not after that ugly buzzard koch.
