Security Breach Briefly Closes Newark Airport Checkpoint

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A security checkpoint at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport was briefly shut down because a prohibited item was found in a bag.

Transportation Security Administration spokesman Nico Melendez says the item was found Sunday afternoon at a checkpoint in Terminal C, one of the airport's three major terminals. He says he doesn't know what the item was. But he says there didn't appear to be any malicious intent by the person who had it.

The checkpoint reopened 45 minutes later. Authorities say the closure didn't cause any major delays or problems at the airport, one of the nation's busiest.

Last month, a computer monitor checked as baggage caused a security scare at the airport and prompted officials to shut part of Terminal A for an hour as a precaution.
