Staal, Lidstrom To Pick NHL All-Star Squads

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — The NHL's All-Star teams will be selected by Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom.

They have been appointed captains for the Jan. 30 game in Raleigh, North Carolina, and will lead teams carrying their names. Staal plays for the hometown Carolina Hurricanes. Lidstrom is the captain of the Detroit Red Wings.

The All-Stars were determined in a fan vote, and the players selected voted on the captains. The game features a revamped format this year. Staal and Lidstrom will select their teams in a live draft two days before the game.

Chicago is well represented for the All-Star festivities later this month, as captain Jonathan Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith were among six players voted into the game in fan balloting. They were joined by forwards Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp.

The Pittsburgh Penguins dominated the rest of the fan's six picks, as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury claimed the other elected spots.

The alternate captains are still to be determined. They will provide input during the draft.
