Schumer, Nadler Want "Fake" 9/11 Coins Off Market
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - Some people will do almost anything to cash in on 9/11 and now there's a call to crack down on a company selling coins it claims are made of silver from ground zero.
Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Jerrold Nadler said the company, which sells the $29.95 coin commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, has no shame.
The New York representatives claim the Portchester-based National Collector's Mint is deceiving the public by their claim the silver used in some of the coins was extracted from the rubble and that they had the exclusive license authorized to use the FBI insignia.
"Let's be honest, we all know what this is. It's an attempt by an unscrupulous business to confuse consumers and make them think it is the official 9/11 coin. It's disgusting," said Schumer.

WCBS 880's Monica Miller reports both lawmakers say that an official coin will be produced later this year to help fund the National September 11th Memorial and Museum.
They are asking the Federal Trade Commission to shut down the operation and for the U.S. Mint to place notice of their web site alerting consumers to phony coins.
"Every dollar spent on these fraudulent coins is two dollars lost that could have gone to honor those who put everything on the line for this country," said Schumer.
