NEW YORK (CBS New York/AP) — An ice storm Wednesday morning made getting around parts of the Tri-State area dangerous as roads and sidewalks became dangerously slippery.

The latest winter storm is ending as rain in most places Wednesday after an extended period of sleet and freezing rain brought up to three quarters of an inch of ice on streets and sidewalks. Forecasters say rain will continue to freeze on surfaces north and west of the city.

In midtown Manhattan, the freezing rain created a thin layer of crunchy surface on sidewalks and a slushy mess on the roadways. Thousands of power outages were reported Wednesday morning as ice built up on trees and wires. Travel conditions were extremely dangerous through morning, with untreated roadways becoming a sheet of ice.

The rest of Wednesday will see lingering clouds. A high of 40 is expected. Wet and slushy areas will refreeze overnight as temperatures are expected to hit a low of 24.

Thursday will be windy and colder with some sunshine.

Its winter in NY you ninnies!! If you don’t like it buy cheap real estate in Florida. Or how about a pair of good snow boots (not Uggs, you look like a moron) and a few extra layers. Now stop your whining, grab a shovel and plow the sidewalk yourself

I’m out in eastern Long Island, I live on a hill in the North Shore. I can’t even walk to my car because of the ice, yet my job expects me to come in with an average commute time of an hour normally. They can suck wind as I am staying home. raspberries to them!

    Ana in a way I dont’t blame.

Unfortunatey too many people play free lotto and sue and that hurts a serious lawsuit

  4. Danielle says:

Why is it that they are telling everyone to stay home unless it is absolutely necessary but yet they expect our children to either be bused or walk in this stuff to school? I live in Monmouth County and my kids walk to school, the sidewalks are not cleared and my kids would have to walk in the street to get there. Does board of ed really think that is safe?

  5. Steven says:

Any excuse for all the aspiring rappers not to go to school.

    1. Steve says:

And why do you think that asipring rappers somehow have a monopoly on wanting to cut class? Did YOU go to school when the weather was this bad?

  6. ana says:
