The latest winter storm is ending as rain in most places Wednesday after an extended period of sleet and freezing rain brought up to three quarters of an inch of ice on streets and sidewalks. Forecasters say rain will continue to freeze on surfaces north and west of the city.

In midtown Manhattan, the freezing rain created a thin layer of crunchy surface on sidewalks and a slushy mess on the roadways. Thousands of power outages were reported Wednesday morning as ice built up on trees and wires. Travel conditions were extremely dangerous through morning, with untreated roadways becoming a sheet of ice.

The rest of Wednesday will see lingering clouds. A high of 40 is expected. Wet and slushy areas will refreeze overnight as temperatures are expected to hit a low of 24.

Thursday will be windy and colder with some sunshine.
