How To Order Healthy Take-Out

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – When the poor weather keeps us indoors, many take the quick and easy solution to eating: ordering take-out.

It's not the healthiest of options, but Mary Hartley, a dietician with CalorieCount.com, says you can cut corners and order the healthiest meal on the menu simply by checking out the vegetables first.

"So once I narrow it down to vegetables—and really the best restaurants are going to be Thai or Japanese or anything that calls itself natural or organic or green or that sort of thing and then I look for a source of lean protein," she said.

As far as lean protein is concerned, Hartley said there are many options.

"I'm not necessarily saying only meat. It might be fish or shellfish or beans and lentils. I always exclude something that's been thrown in the fryer or is covered with a sauce or cheese," she said.

Hartley said you can then add brown rice with maybe grilled chicken or shrimp. If you feel like Italian cuisine, you should order whole wheat pasta but a small serving then add a salad on the side.

For those who just want pizza, it's as simple as ordering a side salad with the pizza.

"People tend to eat that and won't bother with the greens," she said.
