CT Senate Holding Hearing On Plastic Bag Fee
HARTFORD, CT (WCBS 880) - State Senator Ed Meyer is hoping the state of Connecticut will go the way of Westport in ending distribution of plastic bags to shoppers.

Meyer, who co-chairs the legislature's environment committee, suggests imposing a fee of a nickel a bag.
"This is very much in line with what other places are doing," Meyer tells WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau. "For example, Walmart in California has totally banned plastic bags and they're bringing that across the country."
Meyer notes many stores encourage reusable bags by giving customers a five cent discount when they bring them in.
Opponents worry that a five cent fee would add up for some shoppers who couldn't afford it. Meyer says that is why he proposes an exemption for those on food stamps.
The General Assembly's Environment Committee is scheduled Wednesday to hold a public hearing on the legislation and other bills that deal with everything from raw milk to outdoor wood-burning furnaces.
