HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says the man accused of shooting and critically wounding a Paramus police officer has died from his wounds.

Twenty-three-year-old Michael Carmody of Westwood died around 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, shortly after he was removed from life support.

Carmody had been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Westwood Officer Rachel Morgan late Sunday night. She remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Carmody was shot several times by another officer who came to Morgan's aid.

Officer Morgan was shot during a wild gunfight with 23-year-old Michael Carmody Sunday night near the Garden State Parkway. She managed to get several shots off at the suspect, along with the backup police officer who also opened fire.

Morgan's bulletproof vest stopped two of five bullets. She was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where doctors performed hours of surgery.

"The operation went on for approximately three hours.  Everybody's hopes had come to be realized when we heard the good news that everything went well," said Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbieria.

According to detectives, the two-year veteran was trying to stop Carmody's car. Authorities say Carmody, a Westwood resident, sped off, lost control and crashed on the entrance ramp to the Garden State Parkway.
