NYPD Getting Ready To Rumble With New Siren

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York City Police Department is getting ready to rumble.

The NYPD is planning to outfit all its new cars with a state-of-the-art siren, dubbed "The Rumbler."

The system uses woofers to emit powerful bass sound along with a screeching siren. The result is a sound pedestrians can feel as well as hear.

There are about 150 police vehicles equipped with the Rumbler on the street. Soon enough, 5,000 police vehicles are expected to be equipped with it.

Like traditional sirens, the Rumbler can produce a variety of different alarms. Unlike previous sirens, a demonstration video shows the bass effect is so strong it can be seen moving a glass of water across a table.

The video also shows the bass-driven siren apparently scaring a dog away - even though a traditional siren didn't seem to.

What do you think? Will the new siren make a difference or is the NYPD playing catch up? Sound off in our comments section.
