NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is continuing his aggressive push for changes in gun laws.

Bloomberg and other members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns are launching a national truck tour it hopes will raise awareness of what they consider to be flaws in the background check system nationwide.

The tour is called the truck tour, and it is getting started in Times Square.

The group is planning for the truck to tour the country for two months. The truck is equipped with a “clock” that will toll the number of deaths by guns in the U.S. since the attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Ariz. on Jan. 8. Six people were killed in the attack.

The group hopes Congress every gun sold in the United States will be preceded by a background check. They also want a unified, national database of people prohibited from buying guns.

What do you think? Are current laws sufficient? Sound off in our comments section.

From the mayor of a city that was just held hostage by a clown with a knife? Lol at Bloombeg and all his anti-gun minions.

  2. Old Man says:

Guns AREN’T THE PROBLEM!!! It’s the Lawyers and “do gooders” that won’t allow the criminals to be punished! Crazies and Criminals DON’T GIVE A FLIP ABOUT gun control or background checks!! They are going to get a gun NO MATTER WHAT! I have a RIGHT to defend myself, my home, and my family! If you want to trust YOUR life to the “system” that’s OK with me…just don’t try to disarm me in the process.

  3. Gregg says:

What about the thousands and thousands of guns missing from sellers who claim they were stolen or misplaced ? Where are the tens of thousands of Illegal guns on the streets of New York coming from ? I believe in Legal ownership ! I can’t believe know one can get a handle on this ?Six thousand guns turned in with the cash for guns program in N.Y. – can you believe it ?

  4. ConcernedCitizen says:

The average citizen has no knowledge about guns other that they are in news stories about people getting shot or killed. They don’t read about all the lives that they have SAVED. The carjacking that was averted or the home invasion that was thwarted. They are not aware of the FUN that can be had when shooting targets in safe environment with knowledgeable people. They just keep applauding FEEL GOOD LAWS that DO NOT affect the CRIMINAL ELEMENT one bit.

If we can get a unified, national database of people prohibited from buying guns.– does that mean that all of us that are not prohibited can buy and travel with guns nationally ?? Including NYC, Mr. Bloomberg ?.

    What’s the problem with guns?

    Guns spur economic growth:

    1. Guns & ammo made in the U.S. helps manufactures & retailers.
    2. Guns & ammo made abroad helps retailers (including those online).
    3. Guns & ammo help make gun-maker CEOs a good wage.
    4. Guns & ammo help robbers make a living (it’s better than the minimum wage).
    5. Guns & ammo give some police a reason for their existence.
    6. Guns & ammo help casket makers a good living.
    7. Guns & ammo help keep a Hospital Emergency Room hopping.
    8. Wow, I can go on and on. Without guns, we would be in a depression.

    1. Guns & ammo help settle disputes
    2. Guns & ammo help drug lords with security.
    3. Wow, I can go on and on here too!

99 44/100ths % of all guns hurt no one today.
Guns are used defensively by the law abiding over 2.5 million times per year to stop a crime from being committed
When seconds count, the police are minutes away
When the law abiding are allowed to carry firearms, crime goes down, the “Wild West” scenarios imagined by fear mongers never materialize
Warren vs. DC: the police have no duty to protect you, do not infringe upon my right to protect myself and my family
If you do not want to carry a gun, DON’T; just don’t try to extend that to me or anyone else not prohibited

An irrational fear of an inanimate object has a name: Phobia

  8. JB says:

Once again this mayor shows his elite colors. The law abiding Bodaga owner in the Bronx is turned down for a pistol permit even though he has been robbed 5 times and almost beaten to death and has complied with every oiece of paperwork. However those celibs that are well connected and will NEVER go near a bad neighborhood (and have bodyguards) are given full carry permits. Howard Stern and Robert D among many other of the “well connected”. Guess you have to be of the right class. SAD.

  9. Tired of the Circus says:

Definition of criminal is someone who does not obey the law. What does Mayor Mike think HIS laws will do. I was on Broadway in lower Manhattan waiting for a truck to pick up cargo. In 45 minutes I was approached 3 times to see if I wanted to purchase a handgun. No License, no background check, just cash – I declined. Bloomberg and Co. can’t enforce their own laws (some of the strictest in the Nation)- What makes them think they should go on a traveling road show (Which violates Federal and some State laws) to promote his pet agenda. He should be indicted for conspiracy to violate Federal gun laws for his “fishing expeditions” done with no approval (and direct orders to cease) from Federal and State authorities. He has interfered with lawful investigations, and hindered prosecution of real criminals, all in the name of grandstanding.

  10. Sick of politicians says:

It’s not about “crazy people” having access. It’s about control of law abiding people. Bloomberg wants tougher gun laws. WHO are they aimed at? The crazy people, bad people, criminals etc don’t care about laws. They are not going to be effected by new “stricter” gun laws, only law abiding citizens will feel it’s effects. Just enforce the laws that are already on the books and leave us law abiding citizens ALONE.

  11. Long Island's View says:

I wonder where the funding for this little circus is coming from? Crooks dont care if a gun is legal or not. Crooks dont care about background checks. They dont buy their guns at a local gun shop and submit themselves to a waiting period and background checks. Crooks get their illegal weapons on the street and use them against law abiding citizens whom are being left increasingly defenseless thanks to Bloomburg’s “antics”.

  12. The Doc says:

My idea is this a nationwide gun permit law not allowing individual states or counties to set their own standards just like drivers liceses once you have a gun permit it is good in all states And its not legal guns that are the problem it the lack or enforcement of gun laws already on the books.

  13. Ny'er says:

Once again this mad little mayor wants to stomp on citizens rights. First off, if you dont want to own a gun than dont. If you want to own a gun and go through legal circles to aquire than that is your right. On the other hand, criminals will always get firearms illegally. They will be better armed than those who aquire legally if our rights are taken away. Bloomturd go away and run your investment business that is probably stealing from the working class!

  14. KW says:

Finding a way to track criminals and mentally unstable sounds like a good idea. Making more restrictions for the average citizen seems flawed. Maybe we should really focus on answers to WHY people are doing these. I am pretty certain glocks do not wake up and tell their owners that they need to go shoot someone.
Growing up on MTV…. Teachers scorned for teaching right and wrong…. I don’t know the right answer, but blaming inanimate does not make sense.

  15. Frustrated in NY says:

It’s just so ironic that cities with the strictest gun control laws are typically the cities that have the highest rate of crime (e.g. New York, Chicago, D.C., etc.). Criminals do not follow the law so gun control laws only leave victims with no legal means to defend themselves from criminals. Criminals will always follow the path of least resistance.

  16. Johnny D says:

I strongly support the mayors’ efforts. Do YOU want crazy people having access to deadly weapons. I dont!

    1. Schmed says:

Crazy people will get them, they have no problem getting drugs.

    2. schmed says:

Why doesn’t the mayor start by disarming his personal body guards.

  17. Rocky says:

I hope he is going on that truck to take the tour also Good Riddance
