Report: Nets, Nuggets Reach Deal, Pending Carmelo's Approval

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- It appears we have a winner in the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes. Now, all Anthony has to do is sign on the dotted line.

The Nets and Nuggets have reached a tentative agreement on a deal involving Anthony, according to The Bergen Record.

"Sources tell The Record there is a tentative agreement between the Nets and Nuggets for Carmelo Anthony. Still need him to agree to an ext," tweeted The Record's Al Iannazzone Friday.

The trade is pending Anthony's agreement on a three-year, $65 million contract extension.

According to Iannazzone, the Nets "won't do the trade unless Anthony agrees to the extension."

If Anthony signs, the Nets will get Sheldon Williams, Melvin Ely, Renaldo Balkman, Chauncey Billups and Carmelo from the Nuggets. The Nets will send Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and a staggering four first-round draft picks packing to Denver.

Anthony would have to know that coming to New Jersey probably would end his playoff hopes. The Nets have a 17-40 mark entering the break and are 8 1/2 games out of a playoff berth with 25 left.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov will reportedly meet with Anthony in Los Angeles this weekend, presumably to convince him to sign the extension.

Prokhorov stunned NBA followers last month during a visit to New Jersey when he told the team to end trade talks for Anthony just a day before he was to have a sitdown with the player. At the time Prokhorov said the much ballyhooed, 15-player, three-team deal that also involved the Detroit Pistons had become too become too expensive. The negotiations had also become too public and the constant rumors were hurting his team.

Prokhorov also said at the time there was no chance the talks would be resurrected.

Where does this leave New York? According to the Daily News, Knicks owner James Dolan is also set to meet with Anthony during All-Star weekend.

Carmelo also has been quoted several times that he would love to play for the Knicks.

Can Dolan sway the superstar away from New Jersey?

We'll have to wait and see.
