Comptroller Wins Big For Cheated Workers

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- In a record-breaking settlement, Comptroller John Liu won $2 million for 24 workers who were cheated out of wages and benefits by a contractor doing a job for the city.

"With this, we want to send a strong message to contractors that they must obey state labor law. And, we want to send a message to workers, that if they suspect that they're being short-changed that we're there to help," said Liu.

Liu told 1010 WINS' Stan Brooks the contractor, Paramount Equipment Rental, failed to pay the 24 employees for overtime, night-shift differentials and weekend work.

Liu stressed that cheating workers out of pay will not be tolerated. If companies don't treat workers fairly, warned Liu, the city will go after them.
