LI Doctors Beat The Clock To Rescue Severely Burned Girl From Gaza

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 6-year-old Middle Eastern girl was so severely burned that her growth and mobility would've been severely limited had it not been for the help of some Nassau County doctors.

The Long Island-based, not-for-profit group Mission: Restore took on young Nebal Hani al Shamali's case and she was moved from Gaza to Egypt, where she was immediately flown for care at the Nassau County Burn Center.

Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh tells 1010 WINS' Alice Stockton-Rossini that if it wasn't for their quick action the girl would've never received the necessary treatment

Doctors said the timing could not have been better. Just days later, the riots erupted in the streets and the girl may have never received the treatment that she desperately needed.

"She came here; we basically got rid of all the scars and provided her with new skin grafts so that now she could have full mobility and ambulation," the group's founder, Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, told 1010 WINS. "She's a very cute girl."

"We took a lot of small pieces of skin from other areas of the legs that had been uninjured and covered the areas where we had removed the terrible scars," Alizadeh said.

Two weeks after the surgery, the girl is moving around and on the road to recovery.

"She's ambulating, she's doing great, smiling, playing with her teddy bear," Alizadeh said.

Mission: Restore provided pro bono medical care along with transportation and hospital costs.
