NEW YORK (WFAN) — Last week, Derek Jeter was voted New York’s all-time favorite athlete in a Siena College poll.

This week, the shortstop has been crowned king of MLB jersey sales.

For the first time ever, Major League Baseball released their list of best-selling jerseys to CNBC reporter Darren Rovell. The NFL and NBA routinely announce their jersey sales every year.

According to Rovell, Jeter’s position at No. 1 shouldn’t be a surprise, given the future Hall of Famer is the “most marketable player on the most marketable team.”

Joe Mauer, Roy Halladay, Chase Utley and a near-Yankee, Cliff Lee, round out 2010’s top five.

Jeter’s jersey coup proves the Yankees’ aging shortstop is as popular as ever. What may surprise some fans is the other Bronx Bomber that cracked the top ten — Alex Rodriguez.

From A-Rod’s 2009 admission to performance enhancing drug use to his Super Bowl popcorn fiasco, Rodriguez hasn’t endured tremendous fan support in New York. Perhaps his ninth best-selling jersey proves that better times are to come for the “Lightning Rod.”

To round out the bottom half, Albert Pujols came in sixth, followed by Josh Hamilton, Dustin Pedroia, Rodriguez and Tim Lincecum.

If you had to buy an MLB jersey right now, who would you wear on your back? Sound off in the comments below…

Minka , I like Jeter myself and I’m from Lowell Massachusetts. Love him for the very same reasons you just stated, but just don’t tell all those Red Sox fans will you.

  4. Hector says:

why should this be a surprise, Jeter not only has been Yankees fans favorite player, but one of baseballs favorite. Then there’s a A-Rod, Yankees & A-Rod haters can say what they want about A-Rod, but I’ve gone to Yankees Stadium & a few other stadiums around the country (Shea, Citi Field, Camden Yards, Dodger Stadium, Rangers Ballpark & Tropicana Fields) and the players names I see on the back of most jerseys are three (3) Jeter, Rivera & Rodriguez
