GREENWICH, CT (WCBS 880) - New cell towers are popping up all over the place, some even without warning. But one planned cell tower in a Greenwich neighborhood has a battle raging.

The current cell tower, resembling a flag pole, would give way to a taller one adorned with fake evergreen.

One resident gripes to the Greenwich Time that the town fought a tower plan in another neighborhood but not in Byram which he staid is being treated as a "second-class citizen."

Resident Bob Bishop says talk like that clouds the real issue.

"The tower is not sufficient for the mobile use and I think they have to fix it. As long as they have a site, use it," says Bishop.

The matter is up to the state more than the town. The Connecticut Siting Council will visit the area ahead of a public hearing on Verizon's proposal which will be held Tuesday at the Cole Auditorium at the Greenwich Library at 101 West Putnam Ave.

The council will fly balloons to simulate the 84-foot height of the proposed tower.

The exact location of the new tower would be 36 Ritch Avenue West.
