About 1,000 participants, many wearing the encouraged pajamas, swung soft, feather-free pillows at each other for the massive celebration, reports 1010 WINS' Terry Sheridan.

"This is the kind of thing you can only do in a large city – get a group together this big," one reveler said.

Pillow Fight Day, which first took place in New York City in 2003, is celebrated in cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Brussels and Bordeaux.

The event isn't a free-for-all, though, as there are three main rules: no hitting people with glasses, no hitting people with cameras, and no hitting people without pillows.

Donations were accepted at the event for the pillows. The funds collected will benefit a no-kill animal shelter.

CBSNewYork.com web content producer Evan Bindelglass was also inside the crowd and shot well over 100 photos for his blog. If you were there, perhaps you'll find yourself in one of his photos. CLICK HERE to check them out.
