Report: NJ Voters Approve Many School Budgets
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey voters were being a bit more generous, one year after they rejected most school budget proposals.
According to early returns compiled by The Star-Ledger of Newark, the majority of budgets passed Wednesday in elections.
A full, unofficial tally was expected Thursday.
Even though school costs are the main factor in the state's property tax bills, most budgets are adopted each year.
Last year, voters rejected nearly six in 10 as Governor Chris Christie campaigned against those budgets where teachers weren't taking voluntary pay cuts. Christie wasn't active in yesterday's elections.
Also Wednesday, some municipal governments asked voters to approve budgets that would hike the towns' share of property taxes by more than two percent. Twelve of the 14 failed.
