2 Wounded, 2 Others Injured In Newark Shooting

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Two people were wounded and two others were injured -- including a 5-year-old girl -- when shots rang out on a Newark street.

City police say it's not clear what sparked Friday night's shooting in the 100 block of 9th Avenue. And it's not yet known if the two people wounded were the intended targets.

Det. Hubert Henderson, a police spokesman, said a man was shot several times in the upper torso, while a woman was shot in the stomach. Both were taken to University Medical Center, and their wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, another man and the young girl sustained scrapes and bruises as they tried to avoid the gunfire. Henderson said the man used his body to shield the girl.
