Lesser-Known Superstitions Plague New Yorkers On Friday The 13th
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Today is Friday. Not just any Friday, but Friday the 13th.
This day is synonymous with phobias and superstitions. In fact, there is an actual condition called Friggatriskaidekaphobia which is the fear of Friday the 13th. Actually, it sounds more like something my Italian uncle mutters when he's in a foul mood.
No one is exactly sure how or when Friday the 13th became the day associated with bad luck, but whatever the origin, you're probably familiar with some of these more common superstitions: Don't walk under a ladder; If a black cat crosses your path it's bad luck; If you break a mirror you're up a creek for the next seven years, yada, yada.
However, you may not be familiar with some of the less-common superstitions that plague New Yorkers -- not only on Friday the 13th. Here are the 5 most common:
Orangeticketaphobia: The fear returning to your car and finding a ticket on your dashboard after double-parking
Dogpooaphobia: The fear of stepping in dog excrement on the sidewalk
Doorslammaphobia: The fear of missing your subway train by mere seconds
Peestenchaphobia: The fear of inhaling wafts of urine around the city. * This fear intensifies in summertime
Slowtouristsaphobia: The fear of getting trapped behind group of tourists while trying to get to and from work
