East Village Cupcake Crawl To Benefit NYC Homeless

The Cupcake Crawl, a walking tour of the best cupcakes to be found in the East Village and on the Lower East Side, is taking place this Sunday, May 22.

Manhattan Walking Tours holds the dessert-seeking expedition every three months, but this weekend's excursion will satisfy more than the sweet tooth of those in attendance. The company is charging participants a small fee, which will benefit the Food Bank of New York City.

The tour organizer, Bruce Scher, has been introducing tour-goers to the best of the city's food & drink since 2006 as a professional guide.

After a few years, however, he wanted to do more than make a profit from his business. He began designating one tour each month as a benefit to the charitable cause.

"The monthly walks to benefit the Food Bank started in December 2008," said Scher, who explained that his inspiration came from people he encountered while leading his walks.

"We come across of lot of people on our tours who are homeless and can't afford food," he said.

Sunday's Cupcake Crawl begins at gluten-free, vegan-friendly BabyCakes on Broome Street and hits three more sweet shops before the tour is over.

The event begins at 11:00 a.m. For more information, click here.
